Irregularities and absence of heat, abortions and stillbirths are associated with a vitamin A deficiency. Large amounts of vitamin A are required for egg maturation, ovulation and maintaining pregnancy, but it cannot penetrate the egg follicle. Beta-carotene, pro-vitamin A, can pass through the protein wall using HDL (high-density lipoprotein) as a carrier. There it is converted to vitamin A with the help of the enzyme carotenase.
