Why TMR reheating should be avoided

What is TMR reheating?
The reheating of TMR (Total Mixed Ration) occurs when the temperature of the feed rises by more than 2°C above the ambient temperature. Especially in the warm summer months, this favors the growth of yeasts and molds. The oxygen introduced into the ration during mixing and ingredients such as sugar and starch provide ideal conditions for these microorganisms. Rations that contain a high proportion of easily digestible carbohydrates or added water are particularly susceptible to reheating. In addition, high outside temperatures increase the risk of these microbial organisms multiplying more quickly and impairing feed quality.

Loss of nutrients

The microbial breakdown of starch and sugar in the TMR reduces the nutrient density of the feed.

Lower feed intake

Studies show that reheated feed can reduce feed intake by more than 10 %. This is due to the odor changes caused by yeasts and mold and the reduced attractiveness of the feed. If the TMR smells unpleasant or changes in texture, this can lead to lower acceptance by the animals.

Microbial risks

Reheating promotes the proliferation of yeasts and molds, which increases the risk of contamination of the feed. These microorganisms not only cause odorous changes, but also lead to a loss of energy through metabolic processes in the feed.

Odor and acceptance

Microbial activities such as the breakdown of sugar and starch by yeasts and molds change the smell of the feed. This leads to reduced acceptance by the animals, as they often react sensitively to such changes.

We have tested Mega Grain Liquid:

The temperature curve of a total mixed ration (TMR) over a period of 48 hours shows a clear difference depending on whether the feed was treated with Mega Grain Liquid or not.

  • Untreated TMR (red line): Without treatment, the temperature of the TMR rises steadily and even exceeds the 55 °C mark after 48 hours.

  • Ration treated with Mega Grain Liquid (purple line): The treated feed remains stable at around 18 – 20 °C.

This clearly shows that Mega Grain Liquid prevents unwanted reheating, especially at high ambient temperatures, protects against mold growth and reduces nutrient losses so that feed quality and efficiency remain at a high level

Dosing recommendations for different products

The required application rate depends largely on the specific properties of the respective agent. These include in particular the composition of the organic acids contained, the specific weight and the resulting pH value of the application solution.

Thanks to the targeted combination of ammonium propionate, propionic acid, lactic acid, sorbic acid and orthophosphoric acid, Mega Grain Liquid has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against yeasts, molds and certain groups of bacteria.

The most important product-specific advantages are

  • Low application rate required compared to alternative products

  • Good miscibility with water

  • No hidden costs: density almost 1 g/cm³ – the quantity purchased corresponds to the actual mass delivered

  • No pungent smell in the TMR, which means that the cows’ feeding behavior remains unchanged

This formulation makes it possibleto reduce the dosage while maintaining a gentle, moderate pH valuewithout negatively affecting the animals’ feed intake.

Product Dosage (l/to) pH value Density ($g/cm^3$) Workload Security
